Keta, Volta Region – The once-pristine town of Keta is currently grappling with an unprecedented mosquito infestation, leaving residents, fishermen, and business owners distraught since January 2025 to date.
According to residents,the town’s previously commendable communal labor efforts, which kept the town clean from the seaside to the lagoon and gutters, have been neglected by authorities. The lack of attention has led to a surge in mosquito populations, resulting in a significant increase in malaria cases and fatalities, particularly among children.
“Our town used to be very neat, and the government would support us with spraying,” said a resident. “But now, it seems like they’ve forgotten about us. We’re suffering greatly from malaria, and it’s heartbreaking to see our children fall ill.”
The mosquito invasion has also taken a toll on local businesses. Food sellers are struggling to attract customers, with many visitors opting out of Keta and nearby towns due to the mosquito menace.
“We’re crying out for help,” said a food seller. “People are scared to come to Keta because of the mosquitoes. Our sales have plummeted, and we’re on the verge of losing our livelihoods.”
Hotel owners are also feeling the pinch, with a significant decline in bookings due to the mosquito infestation.
“We’re losing customers left and right,” said a hotel owner. “People don’t want to stay in Keta because of the mosquitoes. We’re begging the authorities to do something about this situation.”
MMTI Press student journalist Sarah Henyo, who conducted door-to-door research and interviews with citizens, fishermen, and business owners, has become the voice for the voiceless. “What are the government and authorities doing about this situation?” she asks. “The people of Keta are suffering, and it’s time for action.”
The citizens of Keta are urging the government and authorities to take immediate action to address the mosquito infestation and restore the town’s former cleanliness. The question remains: will their pleas be heard?
